Werner and Sue Zettl capped off their 2016 CAMS Australian Off Road Championship campaign at the recent Waikerie Riverland Enduro in style, although fell narrowly short of securing the #201 plate for next season.

Heading to Waikerie with an 8 point lead in the battle for the Super1650 AORC crown over their nearest rivals Graham and Bodie Tickner, the Zettl’s were in for a challenge as all crews were racing for points on every lap.

Saturday was prologue day where Werner and Sue stamped their authority early claiming the quickest time of a Super1650 buggy, placing them 39th on the grid for race day. After a cold winter’s night under the South Australian sky, the Greg Campbell built Jarvi and crew woke on Sunday to the final day of the championship with everything to play for.

Lap 1 was a chance to get comfortable with the unfamiliar Riverland conditions and their Jarvi which had performed flawlessly to date. The Tickner duo claimed first honours in the championship battle by a mere 33 seconds over the 80km lap. As many cars slowly exited the race Werner and Sue pushed hard on lap two and crossed for what would be their fastest time of the event, 46minutes and 24seconds which was enough to level the ledger with Tickner.

After the first compulsory service break conditions became tough as deep ruts, heavy dust and dark clouds looking ominous created extra challenges for driver and their machines. Werner continued his clean event completing lap 3 and 4 with consistent times, however was unable to match the times of Tickner who had narrowly regained the momentum.

Werner and Sue pitted for their final 15minute service break before heading back out for the final lap where rain and hail greeted the competitors throughout. Although nothing was going to stop the Zettl’s, who crossed to a raised checkered flag which confirmed the completion of every kilometre of the Australian Off Road Championship.

A very satisfied Werner and Sue finished the Waikerie Enduro in 12th outright and 2nd in the Super1650 class, a great achievement for their debut run. The Super1650 championship fight came down to the final lap and it was the Tickner combination who claimed the #201 for 2017 by 6.4 points, with only 3 and a half minutes separating the crews at Waikerie. Werner and Sue would like to congratulate Graham and Bodie on their Australian Championship win!

After a frantic 2016 AORC campaign Werner’s Off Road Racing will regroup, prep and ready themselves for their favourite race on the calendar, The Hunter Rivmasta Warialda 200 in September. “It has been a fantastic series, we really enjoyed ourselves. All three events were a great challenge made more enjoyable by our championship battle with Graham and Bodie! Now we can look forward to our favourite race up at Warialda, it’s a pearler. Best weekend on the calendar – we can’t wait” said Werner.

Werner’s Off Road Racing would like to thank all their supporters especially Ross from Desert Speed Lab, Greg Campbell Motorsports, Revolution Smash Repairs, Gerald from Springwood car care and to the sponsors WS Building & Project Management.
