Sam Barnes and his Krakka Koldee Racing team #179 know a thing or two about the legendary Tatts Finke Desert Race; this week they will converge on the red centre primed for another assault. Birdsville based Barnes will line up beside South Australian Grant Bowden in the Krakka Koldee Nissan powered Superboot RV2 on Saturday, looking to overcome a disappointing 2017 campaign.

With a band of strong results already on the board at Finke over the years including an 11th outright and first ProLite home in 2016, along with three Sportsman class victories in 04, 06 as navigator and 09 as the driver, Barnes is set to be highly competitive once again in 2018.

Barnes’ racing career commenced in 2004 as a navigator alongside his father Peter in a Suzuki powered 1300cc buggy, where they claimed the Australian Off Road Sportsman Championship and the South Australian Outright Championship. 2007 saw the changing of the guard at Krakka Koldee when Sam took over the driving duties from Peter who had been spearheading the team in the Australian off road arena since 1979.

Success was instant for Sam, claiming the 2007 Australian Off Road Sportsman title in his first attempt, whilst more class silverware followed swiftly with a second national title in 2009. In a search for greater speed, Barnes and crew then developed their current Superboot ProLite machine, which was unleashed in 2011.

The biggest challenge Krakka Koldee face is tuning suspension for the iconic Finke whoops which is an art in itself; one Barnes and crew tackle head on when they arrive in Alice Springs for the big dance. Being remotely located Barnes runs a limited race schedule, although loves supporting the Finke event annually – a race where he is longing for a top ten finish.

Barnes would like to thank the team’s sponsors RTM (RoadTech Marine), Phillip’s Foote Restaurant, Birdsville Roadhouse, Krakka Fabrication, Not Just Hardware and the Millicent Tyre Centre for their continued generous support.
